A record room turns nostalgic— for music and for lifestyle

“Interior design in itself is such a feeling. You can walk into a room, and you really don’t have to say anything—it just makes you feel a certain way. And I feel like music kind of does that, too,” says Nicole Henson, owner of KC Interior Company.
That’s why creating a record room in Jay and Denise Green’s Riss Lake home was such a dream project for Nicole.
“I wanted to bring in a lot of feeling and emotion in this space,” Nicole says.
While the Greens chose Riss Lake as a family-friendly place to raise their son, they wanted their home to maintain some elements of their pre-kid life. The record room is a place where they can put on some music and relax with friends—no toys in sight.
With musical influences such as Beck, Nathaniel Rateliff, Talking Heads and Bill Withers, Nicole knew she needed to bring some rock ‘n’ roll vibes to the space, along with a sense of nostalgia. She found a vintage cabinet from Populuxe KC that pulled everything together.
“It was really important to me that the room feel new and fun and exciting, but also lived-in, curated, homey and cozy, and that piece really did that,” she says.
And you can’t be in the record room without noticing the yellow velvet sofa.
“It’s just a pop of yumminess in your face when you walk in,” Nicole says.
As part of a full-floor renovation, the record room is just one of the eye-catching spaces in the Greens’ home. Nicole designed each space to have its own unique vibe while also flowing nicely with the other rooms.
From the steel-blue cabinets and geometric tiles in the kitchen to the velvet curtains accenting the bold, blue formal dining room, the home’s design feels vibrant and eclectic in a comfortable, accessible way.
The Greens enjoyed collaborating with Nicole to make some bold choices while creating a space that reflected their family’s personality.
“Nicole helped make our home a place we’re excited about,” Denise says. “It’s a little funky and comfortable, like us. We’re excited about the risks she helped us take to get a look that is ours.”
