This kitchen addition was designed for a vibrant family of nine, with one member living with physical limitations that brought unique accessibility needs to the forefront. The goal was to create a highly functional, inclusive kitchen space that could seamlessly serve a large household—while integrating smart technology and clever design for safety, storage, and daily ease.
The new kitchen features a complete lockdown system, controlled by thumbprint access to ensure secure, individualized entry for family members. Hidden functionality plays a major role, with custom storage solutions tailored to conceal clutter while maximizing utility. The layout supports frequent, large-group gatherings, turning meal prep and family time into a smooth, enjoyable experience.
Designed to feed a tribe and adapt to every user, this kitchen balances style with advanced function—offering a central hub that empowers independence, connection, and ease for all.
1.The existing kitchen layout is overly open, lacking the ability to secure food and prep areas—posing challenges for safely managing the needs of a disabled family member. The current lockable pantry is undersized and insufficient for the storage demands of a large family. While the serving space is adequate, the cleaning station overlaps this area, creating frequent congestion and disorganization during family meals, ultimately making shared dining experiences feel chaotic and messy.
2. There presented a unique challenge to keep an open feeling while simultaneously closing the Kitchen off from the rest of the house.
3. Integrating stacked plumbing fixtures—including an Elkay water dispenser and ice maker—above a finished basement space presented a complex design and execution challenge.
1.The redesigned kitchen features two separate islands—one dedicated to serving and the other to cleaning—ensuring smooth, efficient workflow and minimizing mealtime disruption. Ample food storage is integrated throughout, supported by the ability to fully secure the entire kitchen space for safety and control. The former kitchen area now houses lockable storage closets, providing convenient overflow space for non-food items while keeping essential supplies easily accessible.
2. While the kitchen is designed to be securely closed off from the rest of the home, the thoughtful addition of a second island brings a sense of openness and connection back into the space. This island not only offers much-needed prep space for a large family’s daily cooking needs, but also serves as a built-in gathering spot for younger children. Whether snacking, crafting, or doing homework, the kids can remain close and engaged—allowing mom to work efficiently while still feeling connected to the rhythm of family life.
3. Precise coordination was required to ensure both adequate supply and compliant drainage without disrupting the finished areas below. Our plumbing team delivered a flawless solution, successfully routing all necessary supply lines and installing properly coded drains, meeting functional demands and code requirements with expert precision.
