Originally built in 1911, this Colonial estate underwent a comprehensive renovation designed to restore its historic integrity while adapting the home for modern family life. The project included everything from exterior tuckpointing to a full gut remodel across three floors. Every decision balanced preservation with transformation—retaining the architectural character of the original estate while thoughtfully layering in the client’s aesthetic. Because the homeowners love to entertain and are raising three children, the redesign prioritized both elegance and livability, creating spaces that feel welcoming, functional, and timeless.

The renovation came with several challenges. The property is located roughly an hour and a half from the designer’s home base, requiring careful coordination throughout the process. In addition, the first phase of the project—constructing a pool house where the family could live during the renovation—took place during the COVID pandemic, when supply chain disruptions and scheduling uncertainties were common. As with many historic homes, unexpected conditions also arose once work began.

Clear communication and teamwork proved essential to keeping the project on track. With the homeowners living on site, they were able to remain closely involved in day-to-day decisions. A dedicated contractor’s point person provided consistent updates, often using FaceTime to maintain real-time collaboration. The designer visited the site approximately twice a month, ensuring the vision remained aligned as the historic estate was carefully brought back to life.
