Custom Home 3,001-6,000 sq ft
Perched atop a hillside overlooking the Country Club Plaza, this residence embodies precision, balance, and material harmony. Two stacked, perpendicular volumes interlock to form an architectural “dovetail” that gives the home its name. The grounded masonry base connects outdoor gathering spaces at both the front and back of the site, while the upper metal-clad form cantilevers boldly outward, capturing uninterrupted views of the city. The project pioneers the first residential application of a cold-formed metal panelized structural system. This innovative approach enabled the team to achieve the client’s goals of long, open spans, clean ceilings, and refined minimalist lines. The fully integrated design and construction process ensured structural efficiency and design precision while navigating the technical demands of the steep, constrained site. The result is a modern residence that appears to float above the landscape while remaining anchored to its environment.
The project presented several technical and logistical challenges. The tight, sloping site required complex excavation and shoring to accommodate the structure and pool, while maintaining the home’s dramatic cantilevered design. The highly integrated architecture demanded precise coordination between the structure, finishes, and extensive custom casework. The use of a cold-form panelized wall system allowed for exceptional control of quality and detailing, ensuring seamless execution of the intricate design within a constrained site and schedule.
All framing, erection, and carpentry were self-performed by an in-house team, allowing for superior coordination and quality control. This hands-on approach ensured that the intricate details—such as the three-story slatted screen wall and custom casework—were flawlessly executed, uniting structure and finish into a cohesive, architecturally expressive home.
