Outdoor Living Space + Pool Suburban Staycation After moving back to Kansas City from Seattle, this young couple wanted their newly purchased home to reflect their lifestyle and long-term vision.
Bathroom—Primary
The vision for this project was to transform a dated, compartmentalized primary bathroom into a serene, spa-inspired retreat that celebrates light, nature, and thoughtful design. The client wanted a calming at-home spa experience—complete with a large steam shower with dual shower heads, heated floors, a separate water closet, double vanities, and generous storage—while creating a more intuitive layout within a modest footprint.
One of the greatest challenges involved reconfiguring the home’s layout by swapping the locations of the bathroom and closet and borrowing space from the primary bedroom. While this change improved functionality, it eliminated the bathroom’s original natural light source. Every inch of the new 130-square-foot footprint had to work efficiently while maintaining a sense of openness and calm.
The solution focused on restoring the connection to the outdoors and emphasizing visual spaciousness. A new large window was introduced, bringing natural light into the room and framing views of the wooded backyard. Custom rift-sawn oak cabinetry, finished in a warm stain, anchors the design with natural texture. Distinctive routed linear detailing elongates the space visually, while the floating vanity—raised six inches above the floor with tile running beneath—enhances the sense of openness.
Inside the shower, light-toned “tic tac” tile introduces subtle texture, paired with a long horizontal niche that stretches across the wall to reinforce the room’s width. A frameless glass enclosure allows light to travel freely throughout the space.
The result is a balanced composition of warm and cool tones, soft curves, and clean lines—transforming a compact footprint into a tranquil, light-filled sanctuary.
