What used to be a forgotten storage closet under the stairs is now one of the most-loved spots in the home. This little hideout feels special without taking itself too seriously. It’s a place for kids to curl up with a book or for guests to stumble upon and catch the game in the adjoining basement living area. Layered textures, soft light, and a calm color palette make it feel collected and inviting, perfectly in step with the home’s relaxed personality.

Transforming the space was trickier than it looked. The area had low ceilings, sharp angles, and no natural light. The design could not change the stair structure or take away valuable square footage. Every decision, from electrical placement to custom millwork, had to be precise. Wood paneling wraps the walls, balanced by preppy wallpaper and plush cushions. Wall sconces add a soft glow and allow for a perfect reading spot. Every material works hard and looks good, proving that good design doesn’t need a big footprint.
