The homeowners came to the project without a defined design vision but were clear about how they wanted to live in the space: more room for an island, additional prep space, and a kitchen that felt distinctly their own. Their only must-have was a salvaged copper hood, which became the centerpiece of the design. From there, the team balanced functionality with character, incorporating a butcher block–topped island, Belvedere quartzite counters, and a copper sink that echoes the warmth of the hood.

The existing fireplace was thoughtfully integrated into the design, anchoring the room and reinforcing its sense of warmth and history. While the main cabinetry was painted, the refrigerator and pantry were designed as freestanding, furniture-like pieces to add depth and functionality. Handcrafted details—including a hand-forged iron pot rack, hand-painted ceramic tile, and soft slipcovered stools—layer in texture and create an eclectic cottage-style kitchen rooted in natural materials that will only grow richer with time.

The space was originally a den, requiring major adjustments to function as a kitchen. An exterior door had to be filled with stone that matched the home’s façade, and the ceiling height needed to be reworked. Borrowing space from the attic allowed for a raised center ceiling with beams, adding warmth and scale. The fireplace location also influenced the layout and circulation.

Matching stone was sourced locally to maintain the façade. The ceiling was raised and accented with beams, while the fireplace became a design anchor, shaping the coffee bar alcove and a redesigned hearth that improved circulation without sacrificing charm.
