This 1929 Tudor in Kansas City had charm, but its kitchen told a different story. A narrow galley with an awkward 1980s remodel left the space dark, cramped, and disconnected from the home’s character. Fluorescent lights and a custom soffit made the room feel closed in, while functional issues—like an oven held together with tape—made daily routines challenging.

The clients wanted a kitchen that honored the home’s Craftsman roots while supporting modern living: an island with a Wolf cooktop, a wall oven, pantry storage, and a layout that worked for family life. Opening the wall between the breakfast nook and kitchen created space for an island, improved flow, and enhanced light. Careful planning addressed multiple doors, windows, and a powder bath, while appliance placement balanced function and circulation.

Challenges included rerouting a hidden plumbing stack and venting the downdraft cooktop through the concrete floor due to the stone foundation.

The design introduced quartersawn white oak cabinetry in a rich stain, Typhoon Bordeaux granite countertops, glazed ceramic brick backsplash, and terra-cotta-look porcelain hex floors. Deep drawers, utensil pullouts, and tall pantry storage maximize every inch. The island light fixture, a piece the client found online, pulls everything together and adds just the right amount of personality.

The kitchen delivers everything our clients had hoped for and more—a reflection of the warmth and character they fell in love with. The mix of materials and colors comes together beautifully to capture the Craftsman style with a storybook feel, and it looks like it’s always been part of the story.
