After more than 20 years in their Johnson County home, the homeowners rarely used the formal living room typical of the traditional floor plan. Following a refresh of the hearth room and kitchen, the outdated space felt even more disconnected. Together, the client and designer reimagined it as a sultry, art-filled lounge and game room—perfect for weekend card games, cocktails, and entertaining. Because the homeowner is an artist with an extensive collection of paintings and pottery, incorporating meaningful display space became central to the design.

The room presented several challenges. Positioned directly across from the front door, it served as the home’s first impression, so the designers wanted to avoid the typical bar-forward layout. The space also felt cavernous due to its high ceilings, yet remained dark and closed off from surrounding rooms. In addition, the entry, dining room, and central staircase were all visible from multiple angles and needed to feel cohesive with the new design. The homeowners’ visions also differed slightly—the husband hoped for a traditional bar and card table, while the wife preferred a moody, elegant entertaining space.

The solution balanced both perspectives. Custom ceiling beams lowered the scale of the room and added architectural interest, while a widened opening to the hearth room improved flow and visibility. A built-in bar was designed to resemble cabinetry and positioned discreetly along one wall, finished with marble, brass, and antique glass for warmth and light. Opposite it, a marble fireplace anchors the room, with the artwork above inspiring the color palette. Throughout the space, layered materials, curated art displays, and thoughtful furnishings create a sophisticated yet inviting lounge now enjoyed regularly by family and friends.
