The vision for this project was to restore architectural integrity to a previous rear addition of a historic Tudor home near Ward Parkway in Kansas City. The renovation focused on reimagining the back addition, which housed the kitchen, family room, and pantry. Updates to the original portion of the home were intentionally minimal—limited to paint and lighting—to preserve its timeless character.

Over time, the addition had begun to feel disconnected from the charm of the original Tudor structure, lacking the architectural detail that defined the rest of the home. The primary goal was to create a cohesive transition between old and new by reintroducing signature Tudor elements while modernizing the space to support the needs of a growing family.

A major challenge was improving the awkward layout and circulation between the original home and the addition. Walkways felt disjointed, natural light in the kitchen was limited, and a former office and mudroom needed to be transformed into a larger, more functional pantry. At the same time, the design needed to honor the home’s historic character by incorporating architectural details already present in the original structure.

The solution focused on thoughtful spatial reconfiguration and architectural continuity. Walkways were redesigned with arch details inspired by the home’s historic interiors, creating a more natural flow between spaces. In the kitchen, a large back wall was replaced with expansive windows to bring in abundant natural light. A redundant patio door was relocated to allow for extended cabinetry and improved storage. Glamorous finishes were replaced with timeless materials, resulting in a cohesive renovation that celebrates the home’s Tudor heritage while enhancing everyday functionality.
