Design Detail
A Delft-influenced tile backsplash transforms a traditional detail into a storytelling element. Rather than simply sourcing existing Delft tiles, the designers set out to create something truly one-of-a-kind—a backdrop that would reflect the lives and heritage of the homeowners while honoring the cottage’s historic character.
The custom tiles match the field tile throughout the kitchen—not only in color, but in clay body and finish—so the backsplash reads as a cohesive whole rather than a patchwork of styles. A ceramic artist not only painted but also hand-made the tiles for this project, allowing for complete control over clay type, glaze color, and finish. The artist worked closely with the team to incorporate personalized details onto select tiles, from flowers representing the homeowners’ daughters, to Native American symbols, to other motifs tied to family stories. The backsplash celebrates both craft and identity—a timeless cottage detail elevated into a work of art that is as meaningful as it is beautiful.
