The vision was deeply personal from the very start. The homeowners wanted a floor plan that supported more generous entertaining and gathering spaces, while still feeling comfortable and reflective of who they are. A prized Native American painting became the grounding design element, with colors, textures, and materials selected to complement it. From there, the goal was to layer in a mix of cottage charm, southwestern influence, and collected treasures from the homeowners’ travels. The result would be a home that balanced functionality with individuality, making space for both family gatherings and meaningful personal expression.

The biggest challenge was rethinking the layout while maintaining a cozy interior. Two major structural moves were required: relocating the staircase and shifting the kitchen into what was previously a den. Both were substantial undertakings, impacting not just flow but also how the main floor was supported structurally.

Reimagining the layout was the key to unlocking both flow and function in this home. By relocating the stairs and kitchen, the team created a more intuitive circulation path that supports family gatherings and everyday living—while maintaining the cozy, intentional character that defines a cottage. In the new kitchen, an existing fireplace was embraced as a defining feature, blending old charm with a refreshed layout. Natural materials like wood and stone were chosen to age gracefully, while finishes and details tied back to the clients’ art, travels, and stories.
