Interior Project: Single Space
The goal of this renovation was to transform a long-outdated home office into a one-of-a-kind secondary living space—a luxurious, intimate lounge and library that contrasts the bright, traditional character of the rest of the home. The clients, recently retired, wanted a room for relaxing, reading, and hosting, inspired by European design and Old World elegance—a “jewel box” imbued with color, texture, and personality.
The transformation began with removing the dated built-in desk and golden oak trim, opening the space for a new layout and a dramatic 14-foot coffered ceiling. Portions of the original bookcase were modified to maintain symmetry and proportion, while walls, trim, and unfinished cabinetry were finished in hand-applied metallic plaster to achieve depth and sheen. A full color-drenched palette created a moody, intimate atmosphere distinct from the rest of the home.
The built-in bar became a focal point and technical challenge. Its domed, convex radius required multiple mockups, precise measurements, and close collaboration with craftsmen to ensure symmetry. Marble accents and integrated lounge seating reinforced its social function. A custom stained glass and iron door echoed the bar’s curves, each pane hand-fitted to accommodate slight size variations.
Flooring integration preserved a portion of the original limestone while incorporating a hand-chiseled Calacatta marble border, and a Turkish marble fireplace surround added further European character. Extended lead times for imported materials and bespoke elements demanded proactive scheduling and coordination.
Every challenge became an opportunity for creativity and precision. The result is a space that feels entirely bespoke and transportive—a moody, refined lounge and library that balances drama, comfort, and individuality with intention and artistry.
