After moving back to Kansas City from Seattle, this young couple wanted their newly purchased home to reflect their lifestyle and long-term vision. Following a full interior and exterior renovation, they focused on the backyard—the final phase of the transformation. The yard was expansive but uninspired, anchored only by a deteriorating wood deck, when the owners envisioned a resort-style retreat and cohesive flow connecting to the home’s updated architecture. They also wanted the space to grow with their son and host gatherings large and small.

The original deck required full demolition, and the yard’s slope demanded precise layout and grading. The pool bathroom needed easy outdoor access while blending with the home’s interior.

The new design includes a freeform pool with integrated spa and raised slide, waterfalls, fire bowls, and LED bubblers. The sunken firepit lounge features curved stone seating and subtle underlighting. The screened porch connects via a 16’ sliding door to the hearth room, with a modern fireplace, bar, heaters, and decorative concrete floors. Hardscaping, retaining walls, stone borders, a dining area, and a sport court create defined zones. Landscape lighting, material continuity, and plantings enhance privacy and beauty.
