The existing rear yard, as it was, offered privacy and enclosure, framed by the home and mature green walls. Yet the original patio—with its fireplace, walls, and grill—felt disconnected, as though placed without intention. It turned its back on the landscape. The team’s vision was to create a pavilion that established a true sense of place: immersive, richly detailed, and interactive with the yard—an environment suited for both intimate evenings and lively gatherings, grounded in permanence and timeless materials.

Drainage posed a primary challenge. The yard’s flat topography, increased hardscape, and prominent garage utilities required careful integration. Just as critical, the pavilion could not diminish natural light to the home’s south-facing great room, dining area, or primary suite. Positioning the pavilion east of the garage preserved interior light and formed a courtyard spine between house and addition. A bubbler fountain and hot tub introduce movement and sound, while axial alignment connects the great room, pavilion seating, and dining areas.

A masonry backdrop conceals utilities and anchors the grill, bar, and sink near the home for convenience. The open sitting area—complete with fireplace, TV, and heaters—flows into a dining wing open on three sides. Low masonry walls define space without blocking views, softened by layered plantings.

Brick, stucco, copper gutters, slate roofing, and heavy timber details mirror the home’s architecture, making the pavilion feel original. Vaulted ceilings, clerestory light, and meticulously detailed brick pavers elevate the experience.
