Bathroom—Primary
The vision for this primary bathroom was to create a modern retreat that reflected the couple’s distinct tastes. The husband gravitates toward a Southwestern aesthetic while the wife prefers mid-century modern design. The challenge was to merge these influences into a cohesive, timeless space. The design team established mid-century modern finishes as the foundation—walnut cabinetry, terrazzo floors, and a planked ceiling—then layered in subtle Southwestern character through color, texture, and art. A painting by Mark Maggiori became the visual anchor, bridging the styles with its vivid, contemporary interpretation of Western imagery.
The existing bathroom footprint was expanded slightly by borrowing space from the oversized primary bedroom, allowing for a more spacious and functional layout while maintaining the bedroom’s scale. Material selection played a central role in defining the design. Clear-coated walnut cabinetry introduces warmth and mid-century character, while terrazzo flooring grounds the space with durability and heritage. Behind the vanities, a bold red-dyed travertine mosaic adds depth and warmth, echoing tones found in the artwork.
The ceiling became one of the room’s defining features. Planked and finished in a satin rust tone, it adds texture and subtle drama while reinforcing the Southwestern influence. Because recessed lighting would disrupt the ceiling detail, low-profile flush-mount fixtures were selected to provide sufficient illumination while preserving the design integrity.
Together, these elements create a bathroom that feels deeply personal—blending two design sensibilities into a balanced, expressive retreat that is both functional and timeless.
