The Speakeasy celebrates the secretive charm of Kansas City’s Prohibition era, creating a hidden retreat designed for entertaining and escape. Descending the stairs, guests are transported to another time, where deep greens, warm golds, and antiqued brass create a rich, inviting glow. Vintage Chesterfield sofas, emerald velvet barstools, and stately built-ins surround a shimmering central bar with a backlit display of premium spirits. A custom “Liquor Lockup” stores special bottles under lock and key, while the adjoining Game Room—anchored by an antique pool table rumored to have belonged to P.T. Barnum—adds playful energy with circus-striped accents, cheeky art, and custom billiards and dart pieces. The goal was to create a memorable place to slow down, connect, and enjoy time together.

Originally, the 1906 basement was a whitewashed stone space cluttered with exposed utilities, awkward lighting, and a makeshift furniture bar that lacked function or character. Mechanical upgrades during construction introduced additional challenges, including the need for an HVAC closet and accommodations for a large electrical panel.

A thoughtful space plan transformed the basement into a functional entertaining suite. The existing antique bar was carefully dismantled and rebuilt with modern amenities including a sink, dishwasher, ice maker, beverage fridge, and custom storage. Beadboard and paneled walls conceal utilities while maintaining access. Deco-era lighting, reflective wallcoverings, and repurposed antiques add authenticity and warmth. Hidden panels and salvaged architectural pieces cleverly disguise mechanical elements.

The Speakeasy is a place of high craftsmanship and pure fun, reflecting transport to another era—one where optimal function, artistic ambiance, and a point of view with regard to creative sustainability in design reign. Visitors to the Showhouse voted it their favorite room in record numbers, and the homeowners share regularly how much they’re enjoying it for hosting—from large company parties to nights in with family and friends.
