Outdoor Living Space + Pool
Inspired by shows like Pool Kings and Insane Pools: Off the Deep End, this client envisioned his backyard as an immersive outdoor environment featuring a walk-in, swim-in grotto with dual entrances, a jump platform into the deep end, a swim-up bar with fiber-optic-lit seats, and a large integrated spa.
Additional features included a sunken seating area, reef ledge, multiple water features, a sunken fire pit lounge, and a fully equipped outdoor kitchen. Entertainment was central, with three strategically placed TVs—inside the grotto, near the pool, and in the kitchen. Lighting was critical, with custom bar lights, step lighting for the grotto and island, and dramatic accent lighting throughout to enhance ambiance.
The project, originally planned for 12 months, extended to 3.5 years due to unforeseen circumstances, most notably the client’s serious health issues, including a six-month hospitalization and six months of recovery from COVID-19.
Site constraints added challenges: a long, narrow, and relatively shallow backyard with utility easements limited usable space. To accommodate the extensive list of amenities, a multi-level layout introduced verticality and distinct outdoor “rooms,” including sunken seating zones and fire pit lounges. The layout was thoughtfully designed to accommodate everything from intimate gatherings of five to large parties. Key features—such as the swim-up bar, grotto, spa, and kitchen—were placed to maximize circulation across the yard. Integrated audio, water and fire elements, layered lighting, and strategic TV placement created immersive spaces for relaxation, entertainment, and socializing. Every element contributed to a cohesive, resort-style experience, maximizing every square foot of the challenging site while delivering the high-end backyard retreat the client dreamed of.
