Historic Preservation
A landmark clock face has been carefully restored, ensuring its continued presence for decades to come. The project focused on repairing damaged areas of the clock face, cleaning and restoring all Vitrolite glass, and weatherproofing the bronze framing matrix that holds the glass panels in place. Completed in just one week from start to finish, the restoration combined precision craftsmanship with thoughtful planning to preserve the clock’s original character. With the work now complete, the clock face is expected to remain in excellent condition for at least another 60 years before significant restoration will be required.
The project presented several unique challenges. One of the most demanding tasks was matching the exact hues of the original Vitrolite glass using Hxtal plugs. Achieving a seamless color match required multiple attempts before the correct tone was reached. Another complexity was performing the restoration in place rather than removing the clock face, requiring careful work to ensure the repairs were accurate while leaving the original setting undisturbed.
Success ultimately came through collaboration and preparation. A knowledgeable and dedicated team guided the work, while an 80-foot lift installed during the school’s Spring Break minimized disruption around the site.
