Ikigai House was envisioned as a modern sanctuary inspired by the principles of Japanese design and philosophy. Drawing from the philosophy of wabi-sabi—the beauty found in imperfection, restraint, and balance—the design departs from Aspen’s traditional mountain lodge aesthetic. Instead, it embraces modern simplicity through clean lines, natural textures, and spaces that invite quiet reflection as easily as lively gatherings.

Designed to accommodate up to 16 guests, the home balances retreat and activity. Open living spaces flow seamlessly outdoors, while private bedrooms and quiet corners provide moments of pause. Communal areas encourage connection—from evenings around the firepit to restorative spa soaks after a day on the slopes.

The design team responded with intentional restraint. Interiors were carefully edited to emphasize material, light, and proportion—featuring flamed stone, hand-chiseled wood, patinated steel, and hand-troweled plaster. Expansive sliding and pivot doors strengthen the connection to the landscape, while flexible gathering spaces support both quiet retreat and vibrant hosting.

Ikigai House exemplifies design excellence through its clarity of vision, rigor of execution, and depth of experience. It challenges the dominant Aspen vernacular (rustic lodges or overly modern, cold interiors) and introduces a new language—one of refined simplicity, material honesty, and spiritual calm. The philosophical integrity, material craftsmanship, integration with nature, functional flexibility, and overall execution, set it apart from the typical luxury vacation home.
