Interior Project: Single Space
The client envisioned a refined, masculine retreat within the unfinished basement of his historic home near the Plaza—a sophisticated “man cave” designed for relaxing with close friends after years spent working abroad. Rather than a typical sports-themed basement, he wanted a calm, elegant environment reflecting his appreciation for art, travel, food, and wine. The program included a poker table, climate-controlled wine room, wet bar, powder bath, TV lounge, cigar smoke ventilation, laundry, and storage. A subtle Asian influence was also incorporated to complement his personal collections.
The existing basement presented several challenges. Low ceilings, bulky HVAC runs, an irregular stone foundation, aging windows, and sloped concrete floors required thoughtful solutions. Exposed plumbing and electrical ran through open joists, and the space needed to remain resilient to potential moisture conditions. At the same time, the client had specific bar requirements, including a shallow service depth, a restaurant-style drink rail, and a comfortable curved armrest.
To maximize headroom, HVAC was redesigned with wider, flatter ductwork while plumbing and electrical were organized and left exposed with the joists painted black. Portions of the original stone foundation were intentionally left visible and painted dark for a moody effect while allowing moisture monitoring. Durable wood-look LVP flooring added warmth and practicality.
The bar, wine room, and powder bath were enclosed with refined materials and custom cabinetry. A backlit slab of Patagonia quartzite became the visual centerpiece within the wine display. Custom soapstone countertops with a mitered profile created an integrated drink rail and sculpted armrest—an elegant reinterpretation of traditional bar detailing. This intimate, sophisticated lounge is perfect for conversation, relaxation, and exceptional wine.
