Bold, elegant updates to a historical home bridge the ages with grace.
n the heart of Kansas City’s sought-after Janssen Place, a historic residence has undergone a stunning transformation that blends the home’s storied past with a vibrant, contemporary flair. Designer Mark Sudermann, owner of SID & Co., and colleague Megan Pittman collaborated with the homeowners—empty nesters with a deep appreciation for historical preservation and modern design.
Sudermann’s living/game room design marries historical elements with modern touches.
“The client wanted to refresh each room while maintaining the home’s historical integrity,” he explains.
This multifunctional space, which serves as both a living area and a game room, features neutral sofas adorned with artistic fringe. The subtle detailing creates a special, almost theatrical feel that doesn’t overshadow the client’s impressive collection of modern art.
The room’s rich, stained wood paneling contrasts beautifully with the bold art and vivid draperies, creating an engaging and dynamic atmosphere.
“The juxtaposition between the modern artwork and traditional wood paneling makes the room feel both dramatic and approachable,” Sudermann adds.
The modern fabric on the traditional game chairs also enhances the eclectic feel, allowing the game table to integrate seamlessly into the room’s overall aesthetic.
In the sunroom, Sudermann drew inspiration from European sun-drenched patios, seeking to create a space filled with natural light and warmth.
“I wanted the room to feel like a European patio—inviting and relaxed,” he shares.
The original fireplace anchors the room, while earthy tones in the furnishings and art set a welcoming tone.
Wicker chairs and a seagrass rug soften the original tile floor, evoking an outdoor atmosphere contrasting the home’s more formal architectural features. Oversized lamps and a whimsical Tom Corbin sculpture add height and playfulness, while the central iron coffee table enhances the room’s inviting appeal.
“The combination of textures and light elements makes the room perfect for coffee or evening cocktails,” Sudermann says.
He retained the original goldenrod trim and bay ceiling in the library, staying true to the home’s historical charm. To balance the gold, he introduced green grasscloth wallpaper, which adds texture and a calming contrast to the golden hues. Alabaster lamps and marble urns contribute to the room’s timeless elegance.
Two comfortable reading chairs and a cozy bay window cushion create an inviting atmosphere, offering a perfect quiet reading or relaxation space.
“The layered textures and finishes make this room both grand and comfortable,” Sudermann notes. The design celebrates the grandeur of the home while making the space accessible for modern living.
Pittman updated the dining room and upstairs family room, skillfully balancing the clients’ contemporary tastes with the home’s well-maintained framework. The family room offers a relaxed space for movie nights and quiet evenings, where the couple could unwind and work on their needlepoint projects. Pittman preserved the original stained wood trim while introducing bold, rich colors and soft textiles, making the room stately and inviting. The standout pieces include cozy gold velvet swivel chairs, adding a touch of sophistication.
Pittman incorporated modern elements in the dining room that mesh seamlessly.
“We wanted to stay true to the room’s historic character but introduce pieces that could adapt to different styles,” she explains.
The addition of a custom settee provides extra seating for family gatherings, while the restored silver sconces and chandelier tie the room’s antique aesthetic together.
This Janssen Place residence exemplifies how thoughtful design can breathe new life into older homes without overstepping boundaries or playing it too safe. By preserving its legacy and infusing vibrant, life-affirming selections, Pittman and Sudermann have created a home for their client that’s as functional as it is beautiful—where history and contemporary living coexist effortlessly.
