Mediterranean Hues and Golf Course Views For This Kitchen Redo
his property overlooking the golf course at Lakewood in Lee’s Summit was a gem in the rough, given its outdated, builder-grade interior. The new homeowners brought in Jill Painter of Bella Kitchens to overhaul the entire first floor. Despite being empty-nesters, they needed the property to comfortably accommodate large gatherings of family and friends with multiple work zones.
The homeowners are creative professionals, both bringing their vision to the design. A collaborative project, the space incorporates their chosen modern Mediterranean-style hues—a warm, natural and tactile palette with some green (but no white or gray)—with lots of natural wood to add texture. Walnut, selected for its beautiful grain pattern, is used for the majority of the cabinets and paired with a beige paint for balance.
Visuals settled, Jill turned to functionality. The original, three-sided angled island had incorporated the range and anchored the old kitchen, while the window over the sink offered a side view of the neighbor’s house. To replace the unflattering view and enhance the flow of the space, she designed a dramatic island to be the kitchen’s workhorse. Jill and her client found the perfect candidate for the island countertop while shopping together. “We saw this amazing green quartzite,” Jill explains. “We both just stopped in our tracks and said, ‘Wow, that’s it!’”
Jill moved the sink to the island to overlook the picturesque golf course, sweetening the view. This change also created the opportunity to design the range hood as a focal point. The symmetrical, tiled range wall is now flanked by narrow windows that drench the space in natural light, complementing the adjacent bank of windows in the family room. A unique end-grain walnut top also frames the sink, adding texture to the entire island.
“It’s really a stunner in person,” Jill says. “This kitchen showcases the use of woods and soft neutrals while still feeling light and bright.”
