Our clients fell in love with the timeless character of this Georgian home and saw its potential to evolve for their growing, multigenerational family. What began as a modest plan for an in-law suite, attic finish-out, and mudroom addition soon transformed into a full reimagining of the home’s interior. Working closely with Piper Wind Architects and Gahagan Eddy, our team sought to honor the home’s stately architecture while breathing new life into each space. The goal was to create timeless, family-friendly spaces that balance durability and comfort with the integration of color, texture, and modern design elements. We redesigned the dining room, great room, and hearth room, adding thoughtful updates to the powder room and kitchen. On the second floor, we refreshed all of the bedrooms, including the primary suite and bathroom. For the newly added spaces, we developed a cohesive vision for the in-law suite, mudroom, and complete attic transformation.
The home exudes a naturally Georgian Colonial aesthetic, and our goal was to introduce a vibrant, modern approach that complements its traditional architecture while maintaining a cohesive design throughout. Balancing bold, contemporary elements with the home's classic details required careful attention to color, texture, and proportion. The attic posed a unique challenge, as it was being transformed into a multifunctional craft and playroom for the children. The vaulted ceilings and irregular dormer placements required creative spatial planning to maximize usability while keeping the room light and inviting. Another key challenge was ensuring that every space felt distinct and purposeful, yet connected through a consistent design language, allowing each room to shine individually without disrupting the overall harmony of the home.
Throughout the house, we embraced a playful dialogue between modern and classic elements, layering color, texture, and pattern to create functional spaces that are both visually striking and livable. To balance style with practicality, we carefully selected durable, stain-resistant fabrics for the dining room chairs, ensuring they could withstand daily family life without compromising the home’s high-design, traditional aesthetic. In the attic, we addressed the unique architectural challenges by painting the walls and ceiling in a unified color, subtly accentuating the vaulted ceilings and dormer shapes rather than drawing attention away from them, while incorporating storage and activity zones tailored to the children’s needs. Each room was designed with its own character—while maintaining a consistent, cohesive palette and material language—allowing the family to enjoy spaces that are both warm and resilient, yet sophisticated enough to honor the home’s enduring Georgian Colonial elegance.
