designKC magazine is launching an annual competition to recognize outstanding projects and professionals in the home design industry in Kansas City. The awards process will honor projects completed since January 1, 2017 within the generalized boundaries of the KC metro. 

$175 Entry Fee Per Project


Professional architects, designers, builders, remodelers, landscapers and artisans are invited to submit their work for review by our third-party jury. Materials used for the judging process and subsequent publication must be submitted in the online portal at in order to be considered. They include: 

  • company contact information
  • a written component of project description, goals, challenges and solutions. (Do not reference or include your company name/logo in the essay.)
  • floor plans and elevations, if applicable
  • up to 12 professional high-resolution images.(Do not reference or include your company name/logo in the images.)
  • a photographer‚Äôs release that designKC magazine has the right to publish the images
  • a list of resources/subcontractors affiliated with the project
  • homeowner‚Äôs permission, if applicable
  • $175 entry fee.

Submission Categories: 

Custom Residence (a newly built, remodeled or redesigned home for a specific client)

Model Home (built as a model for the real estate market)

Interior Project (i.e. room addition, 1-3 rooms, kitchen, bath, basement)

Detached Structure (i.e. barn, pool house, in-law quarters)

Outdoor Space or Landscape

Multifamily Housing (i.e. luxury apartment, condo, townhome, mixed-use project)

Public Place or Commercial Space (i.e. hotel, restaurant, retail)

Design Detail (for artisans/fabricators of woodwork, metalwork, lighting, furniture, etc.)

Judging Process: 

A¬† wide-ranging panel of design professionals will evaluate each project for excellence in design, aesthetics, creativity and functionality under a code of ethics. Photo quality and satisfactory solutions to the project challenges outlined in the written component will also be considered. The judges‚Äô scores will be totaled and divided based on points available in each category. A predetermined threshold will determine whether a project is a¬† winner in the category. The jury reserves the right to not award a winner in a category or award more than one winner per category, according to the scoring threshold. Entries are judged individually‚ÄĒnot in competition with each other. Note: We do not share judges‚Äô forms or comments.¬†

Winner Benefits:

Winners will have their work showcased in a standalone print edition of designKC magazine, on, and across designKC social media channels. Winners will also receive a custom award to be handed out at a ticketed awards gala in 2023, as well as an official designKC competition winner logo to use for self-promotion.
