Project vision or goals
The owners of this home loved their lot and their neighborhood, but had outgrown their existing home. We worked with the homeowners to develop a new home on their existing lot that met the needs of their family and lifestyle while giving them the feel of an old cottage set within the Prairie Village historic landscape.
The largest challenge of this project was to develop a home that contextualized with the neighboring homes – one a previous tear down and the other an existing, quintessential PV Cape Cod home – all while fitting on the typical narrow PV lot sizes.
The narrow lots of Prairie Village commonly make for some dark spaces and dark lower levels in new homes. With this house, we bucked the trend by pulling the staircase partially outside of the residence, on the north side, and wrapped it with windows on three sides. This allows the stairwell to act as a light well drawing light deep into the house and the lower level entertaining space. Couple this with an oversized window well at the basement level and you'd be hard pressed to believe you're in a basement when watching the Chiefs on game day.
