Project vision or goals

The mountain resort-style outdoor spaces and landscaping found around this home—nicknamed the “The Cedar Creek Bluff Retreat” for its location on a bluff lot in Cedar Creek—showcase a deliberate mix of organic, contemporary and industrial elements, creating a beautifully eclectic and well-balanced look that melds well with the native landscape like the home was “made to be there.”

The rear elevation features a two-story covered lanai—intentionally designed to capitalize on the lot’s panoramic views reminiscent of the Ozark Mountains. As the homeowners’ “happy place” to relax, recollect and enjoy the fresh air, the lanai was designed to be supremely comfortable and luxurious. It features exposed steel I-beams, a natural stone fireplace and Andersen Liftslide doors that connect the lanai with the interior great room. When stowed away, the Liftslide doors offer unobstructed views and create one open indoor-outdoor room, thus maximizing the living and entertaining space. A cable railing system, power screens, flagstone flooring and tongue-and-groove cedar ceilings with exposed wood trusses contribute to the alpine resort ambiance.

The home’s front elevation is “picture-framed” by a carefully designed driveway with exposed aggregate, complemented by a free-flowing layout of landscaping (masterfully designed by John Constant of Epic Landscape Productions) that mimics, respects and conserves the native terrain. Finally, a custom curb-side address monument welcomes visitors.

Project challenges
  Due to the property's slope, the driveway sweeps from the far right to the far left. The challenge was to make the unique driveway and landscaping blend seamlessly into the natural terrain while also retaining functionality. The front elevation was also very subtle due to the home being nestled into the hillside.
Project solutions
  Our solution was to build the landscape and driveway to feel like they were supposed to be there. We were very sensitive to the existing landscape, preserving and incorporating the prominent trees into the new landscaping and whole-home experience. We essentially "built to the land" and made the overall layout work with the existing terrain of the bluff lot.
