Project vision or goals

After living in their home for several years, our clients decided they adored their neighborhood and wanted to make the house perfect for their young family instead of looking elsewhere for a larger kitchen, open family room and updated primary suite. The scope of work included a large two story addition to the back of the house and a full renovation to all spaces within the original structure. The new floor-plan created space for a large open kitchen and family room, a proper back kitchen, mudroom, new powder bath, office, sunroom, screened in porch, basement expansion, new primary suite, laundry room and additional bed and baths. Our clients wanted their home to reflect the classic architecture of the original home–traditional and clean but wanted to add in touches of color and flair in their furnishings. We wanted the kitchen to support their extended family for large gatherings as well as for daily life with their two little girls. They wanted a relaxing primary suite, something reminiscent of a luxury hotel suite and a place they could retreat to in the evening. Their project was such a pleasure to work on. The finished product is clean and light, with a fun yet restrained use of color and pops of whimsy.

Project challenges
We adored this family and their vision for this large two-story addition and full home renovation so in all honesty, to come up with a "challenge" is difficult! I think making the kitchen feel unique and classic while still retaining approachable family friendly functionality was a design challenge as well as working with the floorplan and our clients desire to seat 12 in their dining room. With an open floor plan, dining for 12 can feel out of place adjacent to a family room. We didn't want to overshadow the kitchen or design a dining room that lacked formality when the occasion called for dim lighting and mood. Additionally, the new primary bedroom featured a vaulted ceiling–we wanted to ensure that the space retained a cozy traditional feel and didnt lean too modern and out of place with the rest of the home.
Project solutions
We added TON of millwork to this home to try and replace any of the original charm that may have been torn out in the renovation. This included salvaging an original arched doorway in the entryway and copying it exactly for an additional archway into the new addition. We added millwork to the walls throughout the entry, second floor landing and hallway and paneled the entire primary bedroom suite, creating a traditional design that felt as if it belonged in the original home. In the kitchen we created a large island with honed quartzite countertops and a warm paint color. We added tall reeded glass cabinets for dish storage and continued the reeded design element on the millwork panels of the island. We added 2 fireplaces to the new addition–one in the family room and one in the primary bedroom. For their eldest daughter, we created a fun color-dip design using peachy-pink paint and finished the room with twin beds perfect for sleep overs. In the primary bedroom we used a soft mink color throughout creating an enveloping retreat. The vaulted ceiling allowed us to use a chandelier and 4 poster bed.
