Project vision or goals

With a goal of unique design full of clean and modern elements, this Naturally Modern renovation project focused on the home’s kitchen. It was a custom home finished with builder-grade materials to cut down on costs, and after six years of living in the home, these homeowners were ready to make a few changes to the design to provide more storage with the same footprint, and cosmetically upgrade the space with high-end finishes.

The homeowners came to us with some inspiration, and we built on it from their provided starting point. Once the decision was made to highlight natural white oak throughout the kitchen, it was an easy decision to also feature natural stone, color variation and texture. And after a nine month renovation, a modern, intentionally designed and functional new kitchen was delivered to these homeowners — just what they envisioned.

Project challenges
The biggest challenge on this project was how to incorporate more storage into the same footprint. Another challenge was adjusting MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) in each space without impacting the rest of the home.
Project solutions
After analyzing the existing conditions, we decided to remove the HVAC soffit above the cabinets to allow for the new cabinets to extend all the way to the ceiling. Of course, this required us to change the HVAC design, but it was well worth it. We reviewed with the clients their logistical needs, and from there we decided to adjust all MEP placements to deliver a more functional layout. With homeowners that like to entertain and welcome people into their kitchen, we went with an asymmetrical design to allow for functional space, and flexibility. We kept the cooking (and cleaning) off to one side and allowed the other side to have open counter space for prep, entertaining and dining.

Other solutions for increasing storage included extending the width of the island, adding integrated appliances, providing an appliance garage to hide countertop appliances and storage cabinets being included on the front of the island (and on the functional side of the kitchen).
