Project vision or goals

The primary goals for this custom home project were to create a spacious and inviting haven for large family gatherings, infused with the charm of California contemporary design. The vision encompasses an emphasis on entertaining, notably in the lower level, where the plan was designed with a golf simulator, movie room, and a space dedicated to their love of wine. The clients envisioned a grand entryway and staircase as the focal point of the home along with a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. The custom design sits on a rare, coveted acreage lot in Fairway, KS- the perfect combination between great location and a spacious property!

Project challenges
Designing and constructing a custom-built home project comes with its fair share of challenges. First and foremost, it's essential to create a floor plan that perfectly suits the client's needs and preferences while ensuring a seamless flow throughout the entire home. However, the most significant challenge in this project was the unique, bow tie-shaped lot. With wider sides and a narrower in the center, fitting a spacious floor plan and all the desired rooms onto this distinctive layout required meticulous planning and innovative solutions. A stream running through the property also created logistical challenges on getting access to construct the custom outdoor space. The clients also desired a grand entryway, both exterior and interior, that had to make a statement as one entered the front doors.
Project solutions
The design team and clients decided to embrace the shape of the lot, utilizing its shape by spreading the floor plan out wide. By strategically placing rooms in certain areas, it allowed for spectacular views in the most actively used parts of the home. The master bedroom and private areas were placed in a separate “wing” while the public spaces were placed in the center with large windows, framing the custom pool and outdoor space. Because the stream made it almost impossible for equipment to reach the pool and outdoor space after the house was constructed, the design team decided to "work backwards" and put the pool in first. This allowed all equipment to reach the back of the house before the rest of the structure was put in place. To make a grand entrance, the team designed an exterior facade and interior foyer featuring high ceilings and an abundance of natural light and windows. Inside this grand entryway, you have a view through the back of the house to the wooded property and custom pool. These solutions blended creativity and profound appreciation of the client's vision, ultimately resulting in a unique and harmonious custom home design.
